The Live Series: Songs of Summer

Out now on streaming services and digital download is the seventh “chapter” of the Live Series, a joint product of the Legacy imprint of Springsteen’s Sony label and Nugs.net, which produces and distributes his monthly archival sets. This new playlist named Songs of Summer features a 15-track complication of “feel-good favourites”.

The collection is presented chronologically (from 1975-2016), and apart from classic juggernaut hits like Born To Run, Thunder Road, Racing in the Street and Jungleland, The Live Series: Songs of Summer also contains rarities such as The Fever, Blinded by the Light, Seaside Bar Song and Frankie.

To me the gems of this playlist are:

• Thunder Road, a classic upbeat version performed in London, U.K (06/05/81), where Clarence Clemons’ Saxophone is on fire. Thunder Road also appears on The Live Series: Songs of the Road.
• A unique acoustic rendition of Blinded by the Light, that opened the show in Paramount Theatre, Asbury Park, NJ (11/24/96).
• A moving rendition of Racing in the Street (08/03/05), which is the song’s second appearance on The Live Series (also on Songs of the Road).
• Seaside Bar Song, (played live a total of 24 times, according to Brucebase) a crazy fun rocker which, obviously, was a sign request, performed in Virginia Beach during the High Hopes Tour (04/12/14). In the recording you hear Bruce and The E Street Band enjoying themselves playing this “obscurity”, as Springsteen puts it.
