Where the Bands Are (Kiefer Sutherland, 29 September, 2019)

Kiefer Sutherland’s music career started rather recently. His debut album Down In A Hole was released in 2016 and now he is on a world tour to support his latest album; Reckless & Me.

Kiefer Sutherland and his band of five came to Pustervik, Gothenburg on Sunday 29 September. Originally the show was supposed to be on 16 August, but due to an accident it was postponed (see message below)

The show sets off with Rebel Wind, a good rocker and Sutherland’s smoky vocals are a perfect match to the vibrating guitars. The band consist of five members; Dough Pettibone, guitar and pedal steel, Austin Vallejo, guitar, Phil Parlapiano, organ and accordion, Joseph De Leo bass guitar and drummer Jess Calcaterra.

Their country rock is catchy and the band solid. Every now and then Sutherland stops and shares small stories to the songs. The title track Reckless and Me was written during his career as a rodeo cowboy and is about his horse or maybe about himself? (He doesn’t know anymore) In Going Home the protagonist (Sutherland himself) is going home alone after drinking too much whiskey. Saskatchewan is a beautiful country ballad he wrote when rushing home after his mother had a stroke. Blue Street is so new it has never been performed before.

18 songs into the show, the main set is over. Sutherland and the band leaves the stage for a short intermission. They retun for an encore of two songs: Dylan’s Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door and an original song; Agave from the latest album.

Kiefer Sutherland and his band surprise in a positive way. They have both talent and passion. The show is genuine and I’m happy I went, even though the show was on a Sunday evening.
